Helix Hair Labs - Curl Definer Process
Problem
Only a handful of products prioritize enhancing the natural curl pattern of textured hair without causing any damage. When HHL reached out to us, they wanted to collaborate on creating a styling tool that effectively defines natural curls using a low-tech and heat-free solution.
We conducted market research to explore available low-tech styling tools and discovered a scarcity of options tailored for styling natural curls

After extensive research, we identified the top three most widely used tools for styling natural curls: the Denman brush, the Tangle Teezer, and the Wet Brush.
The Opportunity

It was both surprising and disheartening to discover the limited options available for styling tools tailored to natural curls. Motivated by this realization, we embarked on a mission to design a tool that not only defines natural curls but also adds a touch of style.
Ethnographic Research

Before delving into ideation, we conducted thorough research on our target demographic to gain a comprehensive understanding of their lifestyle and experiences.
In addition, we proactively developed a mood board early in the process, carefully considering these aspects to guide our creative exploration

As we began sketching initial concepts, it became evident that a clamp design would be the most favorable and familiar choice.
Once we narrowed down our concept, we thoroughly explored diverse forms to embody the essence of the mood board themes.

With our organic concept in mind, we started sketching out specific details, including non-traditional teeth patterns, assembly configurations, and accent colors for certain components.
Mock-up testing + Prototypes

Alongside our sketch exploration, we scavenged materials to create initial mock-ups for testing, allowing us to refine the overall form. Once we had a clearer direction, we utilized 3D printing with flexible materials to test the effectiveness of the teeth on curly hair, aiming for a silicone-like interaction. After numerous iterations, we finalized our main teeth pattern and developed refined prototypes.
We conducted rigorous testing to ensure the strength of the magnetic dock in both vertical and horizontal orientations. Our aim was to create a user-friendly experience, allowing easy removal of the tool from the dock while ensuring it remained securely in place.
This was crucial, particularly as many users prefer to define their curls in the shower, necessitating the option to mount the tool vertically.

Helix Hair Labs - Curl Definer
A heat-free styling tool for naturally curly hair.
Curl Definer is a specialized tool designed to provide a heat-free styling experience for individuals with naturally curly hair.
This tool is intended for use in the shower or by the sink when the hair is soaking wet. Just like running the back end of scissors along a ribbon, it utilizes tension and silicone teeth to accurately define the curls.
